Dad Denim: A Lookbook

By Roxane Bolon '23

#1: LAYERS ON LAYERS

People tend to gravitate towards the idea that less is more, but I have a tendency to purchase excessive amounts of silver chain jewelry, pieces that pair so well with each other I can’t help but wear them all at the same time. I usually like to pair these types of accessories with either mixed metals or cord jewelry and some funky socks and shoes. I’ve been upping my ear piercing count lately just so I can add more accessories to my looks. Check out my favorite jewelry website Dalmata for some of these layer-oriented chains and earrings! Other chains and shirts are from @rumorsnc on Instagram (my hometown thrift shop).

#2: DAD SHORTS FOR DAYS

On one of my most recent thrift shop excursions, I somehow wandered into the men’s section, where this pair of well-loved acid wash jean shorts caught my eye immediately. Usually, I would label these types of garments as too out there for my style, but I pictured them with a patterned button-down and a simple crop top. I really enjoy dressing outside of my decade and I just felt these encompassed both my vision and the latest trends of throwing it back to the ’90s for style inspiration. Find shorts like these (again) at @rumorsnc or shops like UNIF, Lazy Oaf, and Depop! I’m also always one for a thrift store so I guarantee there’s a pair out there in any local thrift shop.

#3: SOFT TONES & STATEMENT BELTS

I am always one to go for a belt from a stylistic standpoint. Pairing a simple, textured shirt with a mid- or high-level focal point and a dark-colored belt is one of my go-to’s for everyday outfits this semester. If you gravitate towards thrifted pants like me, where there is no guarantee of a perfect fit, belts add both an element of practicality and another texture to your outfit. Tucking in a faded tee or sweater vest shows off the belt and accentuates the contrast of the materials. My goal is usually to dress like I am attending a late-summer kickball tournament. Modify this look with an extra layer on top or your go-to pair of winter pants and boots! Find belts like these on Etsy and Depop.
